    Instructions and preparations

    Kenya Surfari - Jan. 24 - 31, 2025

    Arrival and departure Kenya

For our trip to Kenya we advise you to arrive in Mombasa in the morning of Friday, January 24th, 2025. A transfer will be waiting for you upon arrival. For the return flight from Mombasa we recommend or Friday morning, January 31th, 2025 (end of conference). If you bring your kite gear in a board bag, make sure to get approval from the airline before you leave to the airport.

    Visa

A visa for Kenya is mandatory and without a visa you will not be allowed on the flight. Each participant must personally complete and apply for their visa. This can be done independently via this link: https://evisa.go.ke/ (recommended) or via a commercial agency such as: https://visumbuitenland.nl/kenia, https://visumcentrale.nl, etc. Through our partner in Kenya we have an 'invitation letter' that is pre-filled with your name. This letter will be emailed to you personally and must be added to the visa application. Please note: all documents may be max. 293KB in size and can only be uploaded as JPG. We advise you to apply for your visa at least 4 weeks in advance, so that everything runs smoothly.

See below what is correct to indicate if you apply via: https://evisa.go.ke/ (reason of travel, address details and attach letter). Please note that the correct dates are January 24th - 31st, 2025 or January 24th - February 4th, 2025 (if you opted for the Safari Extension), and attach the (new) provided Invitation Letter at "Accomodation Booking Confrmation".

    Malaria and vaccinations

It is up to each participant to decide whether or not to take vaccinations. Our local partner currently advises against vaccinations. In addition, Malaria is very rare on the coast and is mainly a risk when travelling inland. Furthermore, our partner always provides test kits, and if you act early, it can be solved with just three pills!

The official advice (from LCR) for all travellers to Kenya is to take preventive medication. Again, It is of course up to you what you do, but if you are considering taking medication, the standard advice from LCR is Malarone (250/100mg 1x1t), starting two days before departure and continuing for seven days after return.

    Photos and video

It is great to bring a good camera or a Go Pro, but no drones as they are prohibited. Cameras and other valuables are safely transported by bus when we are kiting and downwinding.

    Special diet

We would like to know in advance if you have any special diet (lactose, gluten, vegan, etc.).

    All-in concept

At Kite Doctors, our goal is to provide you with the most enjoyable and worry-free experience. We've designed this education course so you can relax without any concerns. Supervision

In addition to Niels and John, our CME-course is supervised by Tijl and Cynthia and a driver from our bus.

Cynthia and Tyl are both adventurous souls who have a deep love for Kenya and water sports. Cynthia is Kenyan and shares her passion through photography, exploring remote, beautiful and peaceful locations. She invites you to experience the real Africa with her. Tyl, on the other hand, grew up in Kenya from the age of nine to seventeen and has always loved water sports. He started diving, windsurfing and eventually kitesurfing. For many years now, he has returned to Kenya for the constant wind and enjoys discovering secret places and remote areas. As a team, they not only share a passion for adventure and water sports, but also a commitment to sustainable development and involvement in the local community. They invest in their team of hard-working locals and strive to provide quality to their valued guests. In this way, they bring the beauty of Kenya to life, while also contributing to the sustainable growth of the region.

    Packing list

    • Long sleeved Lycra shirt for sun protection (provided by Kite Doctors for new participants)
    • Surf hat
    • Thin water/surf shoes
    • Bring your largest kites if you mainly use twintip, the wind is usually 18-20 knots max. For wave board (and there are good waves!) you can of course also use smaller kites depending on your weight, ditto for foil.
    • Sunscreen
    • Light clothing, it is really warm there
    • Do not bring plastic (single use)
    • Do not bring a drone
    • Print out and bring your visa (preferably in color)
    • If possible, split luggage into 1 bag for hotel and 1 bag for kitesurfing gear. The kitesurf bag stays in the bus (guarded) so that we have to carry less
    • MONEY: private expenses and extra alcoholic drinks can be paid with the Kenyan Shilling (KES) or with credit card (especially in hotels). You can withdraw money at various locations, including at the airports
    • SIM: We recommend using Firsty, an eSIM travel app for mobile data. Firsty connects to the best local providers, offering fast, affordable, and easy-to-use services. Learn more at: https://www.firsty.app/.
Please note: We will NOT wait at the airport for anyone to purchase a local SIM card upon arrival, so make sure to arrange this in advance or later on your own.
    • POWER: for Kenya, you need a travel plug for the UK or a universal world plug
    • Mosquito time is mainly between 5:30 PM and 7:30 PM. So bring some mosquito repellent and make sure you can cover your legs and arms
    • If you have a snorkel and enough space in your luggage, you can choose to take it with you (otherwise you can rent it at specific snorkeling locations)
